Procedure for Handling Emergency Situations

For Housing Authority of Danville Residents

Emergency maintenance is available 24 hours a day. If you have an emergency after office hours, on weekends or on holidays, please call our answering service at 859.236.6128. During regular office hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday call 859.236.6116.

  1. Gas Leak: Any time the smell of gas is present it must be reported immediately. Residents must report any gas leaks to the Housing Authority of Danville office. If you smell gas: do not enter apartment; do not turn on or off any electrical switches; do not ring doorbell; do not light cigarettes, matches, or lighters; do not use the phone.

  2. Stopped Up Commode: Residents shall report stopped up commode by calling 859.236.6128. If the event occurs in the late night hour, please wait until morning to call.

  3. No Heat: This is an emergency ONLY if the temperature in your apartment falls below 50 F, the furnace malfunctions, the furnace is making a loud noise when it comes on, or the blower fails to work.

  4. Water Leaks: Broken water heater, faucets that will not shut off and are running in a stream as large as a pinky finger or a broken water line. Outside a unit -- Any water line breaks. Resident shall report all water leaks immediately. Resident shall attempt to minimize damage by turning off water at the valve. NOTE: Water leaking from a broken drain pipe under the sink will not constitute an emergency; do not run water in a sink with a broken drain.

  5. Frozen Pipes: In cold weather, any time water is not available from faucet; residents are to minimize the possibility of frozen pipes by allowing water to flow in a thin stream through the faucets during extended sub-zero weather. If the pipes freeze up, the condition is to be reported immediately.

  6. Fire: Open flames, visual smoke, and smell of smoke and/or smoke alarm going off. Resident shall evacuate the premises and call 911. After calling 911, call 859.236.6128.

  7. Resident Lock Out: Unable to enter apartment. NOTE: This is an unlocking request by the resident. Resident shall contact the Housing Authority of a lock out situation. A fee of $20.00 (during office hours) or $50.00 (after hours) shall be charged to the resident's account. Only the leaseholder shall authorize the unlocking of a unit. If this is late at night, wait until morning to call.

  8. No Electricity: The apartment or a section of the apartment is without electricity. Resident shall check all circuit breakers, both inside and out prior to calling in a power outage. If the electricity is off in the entire apartment, check with your neighbor to ensure this is not a community problem. Call the office once you have determined that you cannot find the problem.

  9. Smoke Detector : If the smoke detector is beeping, call the emergency number. If this occurs late at night, please wait until the morning to call. If the alarm sounds, get up and get out. Call 911 and the emergency number.

NOTE: Emergencies will be addressed based on the nature of the event. You can expect all reported emergencies to be addressed within 24 hours of notifying the Housing Authority.
